The problem

Orders need to be grouped into suitable picking batches. Estimating pallet requirements also supports dispatch planning. Both tasks must account for the relevant logistical constraints.

IAP’s contribution and approach

IAP examined historical order and packing data and developed methods for grouping orders into picking batches. Alternatives were compared with previous workflows. A related Proof of Concept (PoC) investigated how order-level pallet requirements could be estimated from item information and past packing operations.

Result and development stage

The logistics solution was deployed in the warehouse. The related pallet analysis produced a Proof of Concept (PoC) whose predictions were evaluated on held-out orders. For order grouping, route comparisons and modelled processing times were assessed separately.
