We are engaged in Knowledge Discovery in the second generation. Knowledge Discovery is the art of extracting knowledge from data. In doing so, we move away from statistics with its theoretical models and prefer practical engineering solutions. We take a look into the data and establish a connection to the real world by engaging with the field of experts and ideally with experts themselves. Often, it becomes apparent that automated approaches and so-called out-of-the-box methods do not work well, and individual customization is preferable. For such individual customization, experts are required who are not only familiar with the algorithms and data, but also know how to properly utilize the expertise from the field.
Dr. habil. Michael Thrun is the CEO of IAP GmbH. He leads the company, founded in 2000, in its second generation.
He earned a diploma in Physics (2014) and a doctoral degree in Data Science (2017) from Philipps-Universität Marburg. The latter was obtained under the supervision of Prof. Dr. habil. Alfred H.G. Ultsch, a leading researcher in "Knowledge Discovery in Databases," at the Chair of Data Bionics. Following that, Dr. Thrun worked for nearly two years at a large international product manufacturer as a Big Data Scientist. He is the author of the book "Projection-Based Clustering through Self-Organization and Swarm Intelligence." His team specializes in Knowledge Discovery through data bionic methods, explainable artificial intelligence, and time series forecasting. Currently, he and his team are collaboratively researching the detection and explanation of genetically inherited diseases in the field of explainable artificial intelligence. In 2022, he received his habilitation in Computer Science from Philipps-Universität Marburg. His written thesis covered the topic of explainable artificial intelligence, and the habilitation colloquium focused on Reinforcement Learning in practice. Additionally, he holds a teaching assignment on time series analysis, data bionic methods of artificial intelligence, and Knowledge Discovery in the Data Science program at Philipps-Universität Marburg.
